76 Trombones!

Its always a sad thing when we go to walmart, walk through the movie isle, and realized we got jipped yet again by our favorite movie store, FYE.  They had American in Paris for 5 bucks.....and we spent 15.....oh well.

I grew up watching classics like My Fair Lady, Gigi and the Music Man.  My family loves old musicals, and when I left home, I started collecting them as well.  I never dreamed Nick would love them too!  Right before we got married, I decided the fireplace in my apartment was disgusting and asked my landlord if I could paint it white.  Then, I made Nick help me.  Haha, and while we painted, I turned on Hairspray.  Nick loved it so much, we watched it again immediately after it was finished!  Then after we were married, I introduced him to Phantom of the Opera, The Music Man and Singing in the Rain.  Haha, oh man.

Singing in the Rain is played at least once or twice a week at our house.  Nick says it is the greatest movie ever made.  He also loves dear professor Higgins and that horrible song "why can't a woman be like a man?"  He started doing a little research of his own reccently, and added An American in Paris and Anchors Aweigh to our collection.  He is convinced Tristan is going to be the next Gene Kelly.

I'm actually really glad Nick loves musicals as much as he does.  We are both convinced its a tragedy that they don't make quality movies like that anymore, and we want our kids to love them as much as we do too.

Here's a list of musicals we love:

Singing in the Rain, because it is just amazing!  "I can't stand'em!"
My Fair Lady, "just you wait 'enry 'iggins, just you wait!"
Fiddler on the Roof, Tevya is hilarious "Tradition!!!"
Music Man, "He's a what, he's a what? He's a music man!"
Hairspray "you can't stop the beat!"
Phantom of the Opera "Christine, Angel!" we are most impressed by the mascarade seen and how in sync everyone is.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, cute movie, but I despise those two kids....."hooray hooray hooray!"
Gigi, "Thank heaven for little girls!"
An American in Paris, ah the sounds of George Girshwin
Anchors Aweigh, it has Frank Sinatra and baby Dean Stockwell!
Oliver, "consider yourself part of the furniture".  I sang a song from this for solo and ensemble in the 8th grade.
Dr. Doolittle "My friend the doctor says..."
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers , Nick's dream is to be a backwoodsman, haha
The Slipper and the Rose, yeah, only took us 2 and a half years to find this movie!! "oh ho ho, what a comforting thing to know!"
Pete's Dragon "we done had our bath in may!"
Oklahoma, Nick would watch this one every day if he could too!
State Fair, I really love this movie, it has the most catchy music I think.  "Its dollars to donuts that our state fair is the best state fair in our state!"
Brigadoon, how can you pass up a magical city that only appears once every 100 years?  And Gene Kelly of course.
The Sound of Music, which by the way I'd never seen till I bought it for Nick.

And of course we can't forget the wonderful Muppet Christmas carol that we happily watch all year round.  Tristan is going to grow up dancing and singing!

  1. I agree, there definitely aren't as many good new movies out there like there. I too like musicals but Karl isn't a very big fan, haha. I wonder if our kids will watch anything besides Disney/Pixar movies...

  3. It was soo random! My birthday last year I was looking around on ebay, and it usually costs over $100, but someone had it for sale for $20.....so! I seized the opportunity. I'd been looking for like 3 years too!
